Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
“Marfa Blues” is my second book, after “Man & Horse: the long ride across America”. That book is a memoir of my travels with my horse, Gizmo, across the United States in 1974, and was written in 2017. It was featured in the movie, “Barbie”, with Ken (Ryan Gosling) reading it. It’s a strange world, isn’t it?
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
It’s called “The Marfa Blues – searching for treasure”. Several things inspired me, including my time spent riding freight trains as a teenager back in the 1960s. I love tales of buried treasure, so the myth of Maximilian’s Treasure was certainly an inspiration, as well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
You mean like being up at three in the morning, or walking down the street talking to myself a lot? Doesn’t everybody do that?
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Way too many to list. I have always been a fanatic about reading, and I consume lots of books. I read around 75 books a year (a book and a half per week…). They include science fiction, murder mysteries (especially British ones), Americana, historical novels, books about digital culture and digital ecosystems, horses, saddlemaking, astronomy and dark skies, and just about anything else I might be interested in. I’ve always been curious.
What are you working on now?
The next book is a science fiction novel that takes place about 75 years from now, here in our solar system.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
For an indie author like me, sites like this are the best way. My books are available as eBooks and in print, so I can run promotions within my meagre budget.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
It’s a slippery slope to hell, so be careful what you wish for! [grin]. Honestly, be true to yourself. Take advice from others, but don’t let them write your story for you. Use a professional editor, fer gawdsakes! If you’re not proud of your work, don’t publish it until you are.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can get used to anything. You can get used to hanging, if you hang long enough.
What are you reading now?
A lovely Ivan Doig novel, and I’m re-reading some by the great John Fante.
What’s next for you as a writer?
You never know, do you? Hopefully, I’ll sell enough copies of “The Marfa Blues” to become a hundredaire.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I don’t have one. That’s like picking out a spot on a rainbow. It’s the entire rainbow that is beautiful, not just a single piece of it. Books take me on a journey, and I’m still on it.
