Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my first full length book, although I have written chapters in academic music books and have a blog.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Man & Horse: The Long Ride Across America”
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, if being up at 3:30 in the morning is unusual, then yeah, I guess I do.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Too many to name. Everything from science fiction (Brin, Benford, Heinlein, Asimov, Stephenson, etc) to fiction (Helprin, Winton, Doig, and many others…) to scholarly non-fiction (Zagorsky-Thomas, Williams, Toffler, Kelly, Lessig)… the list goes on forever. I’m a rabid reader and always have been.
What are you working on now?
Music. I’m a musician. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and I also do a lot of producing for other artists, so I’m working on 3 albums right now, with another one in the works. Playing gigs, doing recording sessions… I tend to keep busy. Also, I teach recording, studio production, and songwriting at a university, so I have my hands full with students.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m terrible at promoting myself. Don’t ask me… I’ll only steer you wrong.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write. Keep writing. You’re allowed to write crap. It’s okay, it’s fine, but just make sure you know which of your stuff is crap and which is good.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you don’t rush me, I’ll work cheaper.
What are you reading now?
I tend to read more than one book at a time. Right now it’s “The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.”, by Neal Stephenson, and “New York 2140” by Kim Stanley Robinson. Just finished “Testimony” by Robbie Robertson, and revisted “It Can’t Happen Here” by Sinclair Lewis.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Good question. I have no idea. I keep plugging away at my blog, with sporadic posts there. I hope to write a science fiction novel someday. I have lots of notes and rough drafts, but I haven’t yet jumped into it. Most of my writing goes toward songwriting, getting my stories out in short, 3 minute blurbs.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I don’t have one. I love so many books that it would be a disservice to all the others if I picked just one.
