Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been a lover of fantasy books since my childhood. I enjoy stories of great heroes facing overwhelming darkness and persevering. Of course, some heroes must fall along the way. I’ve currently published three books, all of which are set in my Records of the Three Realms universe. This is a world that I’ve imagined told stories in my whole life.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The Annals of Skorne. It is a standalone novella set within Records of the Three Realms. The Annals of Skorne delves into some lore historic aspects of the main series. Over a decade ago, I had written a portion of The Annals of Skorne as a short story. Unfortunately, that short story is lost to the ages. I decided to rewrite and expand on it making it a novella.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say I have any unusual habits. All of my stories, I have envisioned in one form or another since I was a child. It was how I escaped and explored, and they evolved as I grew. These characters, these stories are an extremely intimate part of me, and it is my greatest joy to finally put them to paper.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My largest inspiration probably comes from the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I loved the complexity and the depth of the characters. My series name is a homage to the historic records that inspired the novel, Records of the Three Kingdoms.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on the third book in the main series of Records of the Three Realms. The book is called, The Lady of Light and will continue the story of Kari. I always viewed the first two books in the series, The Songstress and The Bearer of the Seed, as her origin stories. Now, The Lady of Light will pull her into the main conflict which will carry through the remainder of the series.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Follow your passion, not the market. Write stories you love, and that passion you have will show through the page.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve heard is to not worry about the quality of your first draft. It is far better to simply get something on paper, because you can always edit it to make it shine. Getting the first draft done is the hardest part, once that is done, seeing what works and what doesn’t and fixing it is a lot less challenging.
What are you reading now?
I recently picked up the graphic novel, The Legend of Kora: Ruins of the Empire.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m going to work on and finish The Lady of Light. Hopefully, with family and work, I can have it finished in a decent time.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Romance of the Three Kingdoms is probably my favorite book of all time.
