Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I’ve recently published my very first book, The Benefits of Sobriety: Get Curious About Drinking Less & Living More. I’ve got another book currently in the pipeline on sports history. Both books have been passion projects of mine. And while they are on very different topics, they are related. I wrote The Benefits of Sobriety about my journey away from booze and, one of the benefits that I found in sobriety was a whole lot of extra time to pursue things that I enjoy. So now, sober, I’ve got time in my life to write about sports, which is real interest of mine.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Benefits of Sobriety was inspired by my kids. I have two really awesome teenagers. They are both much cooler and more interesting than me. They deserved more than a dad who was hungover and missed their soccer games. A dad who lashed out at their mom because drinking made him angry. A dad whose actions normalized drinking at every single social function, all the while lecturing them about making good decisions. Of course, I was that dad. My journey was not quick, but I am so very proud that I could quit the booze and find joy and peace that I never knew would be possible.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a messy, passionate first-draft writer. I spit it all out on paper and sort it out later. Editors love me. 🙂
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are so many excellent books in the quit lit/sobriety genre. Catherine Gray, Sean Alexander, Anne Grace, and Holly Whitaker (among so, so many others) have all published fantastic books. Apart from quit lit, I love to read sports books and anything from the productivity/business/self-help genre. I’ve always been a reader and, if someone recommends a book to me, I’ll happily give it a try, regardless of genre.
What are you working on now?
A new book on American sports history. I’m really excited about this one.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Kindlepreneur to find promotion sites.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep going. There are hard moments and moments when it seems like no one cares about your little book. They do! You just need to find your readers. Keep going no matter what.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Nobody cares as much about what you are doing as you do. Don’t let other people’s opinions influence what you want to achieve.
What are you reading now?
Just finished Tom Lake by Anne Patchett, 10% Happier by Dan Harris, and I’m in the middle of Clementine by Sonia Purnell.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Wrapping up my book on American sports history. It’s a 2023 goal.
What is your favorite book of all time?
100 Years of Solitude. Such a classic, and I enjoy it just as much as a re-read.
