Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I’m a Canadian, former accountant, avid fantasy/paranormal and romance reader and writer, and a lover of everything outdoors. I’ve always dreamed of writing, but for some reason, it took me a few decades to give it a fair shake.
I’ve self-published three paranormal romance novels now, with the fourth on the way summer 2023, and am loving every minute of the journey.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The last book I released is called A Little Help From a Hex, book one in a new series. It’s a paranormal vacation romance set at a supernatural resort & spa on a secret island nestled in the Caribbean Sea.
I love a beautiful destination, and was feeling cooped up this past winter with so few days of sunshine. I decided to join NaNoWriMo in November, and with a loose outline and daydreams of sunshine and sand bouncing around in my head, the Divine Spark Supernatural Resort & Spa series was born!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if this is unusual, per se. But I have noticed my writing is at its best when I’m being fueled by an unlimited supply of M&M’s.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been staying up way past my bedtime to read just one more page since I can remember. From Goosebumps to Kafka, it’s hard to choose a specific title or author that had a more profound impact on me than another. But fantasy and romance has always been my soft spot. That comfortable place I can return that always feels like home.
I used to sneak my mom’s Nora Roberts novels and hide them in my pillow cases as a teenager, reading them at night. The ones with magic intertwined with the romance were always my favorite. If those books hadn’t made an impression on me then, I might not be doing what I’m doing now.
What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on finishing up the second book in the Divine Spark Supernatural Resort & Spa series – Sing From the Heart. Each book is standalone, but it will loosely follow the events in A Little Help From a Hex, and revisit some familiar characters.
I’ve also got the third book in my debut series (Enchanted Earth) churning in my head. I’m getting eager to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), and get it drafted.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve yet to figure that out. I’m self-published, and marketing has been the biggest challenge by far. The writing is fun. Even pouring endlessly over drafts is fun – I like to read too, after all. Promoting is proving a challenge. I’m on Tiktok though. And I’ve got a newsletter that you can sign up for and get a free reader magnet, which has proven (for me) the best way to get subscribers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write the book, worry about everything else later. Writing your first book is intimidating enough. Adding the stress of self vs trad publishing, marketing, social media presence, etc. is enough to derail even the most organized, steadfast writer. Write the book, then figure out what you are going to do with it. And celebrate. Because you wrote a book, and that’s amazing!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can’t edit a blank page. Writer’s block is not real.
What are you reading now?
I’ve been looking for fresh indie reads lately, and just finished the two books in a Genie romance series by Brindi Quinn. They were SO FUN. And the third book comes out soon, so it will be my next read.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I think my next step should be to tackle the pieces of the puzzle that I’m struggling with the most. Building up a solid team of editors, figuring out the TikTok algorithm, etc. But as long as I keep on writing, I feel like I’ll can’t stray too far off the rails.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Oooh. Tough one.
The Hobbit flashed through my head for a moment, because I’m a big sucker for those Shire vibes. But I don’t think a book with almost no women can take the top place in my heart (said with love and fondness for hobbits everywhere).
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley came straight to mind too. I did a book report on it in my English Lit class in highschool, and I never quite got over how much I loved it. It’s got all the things I love, including bad ass lady power. Clear winner for me.
