Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a scientist by training and cannot help but include some of that knowledge in my writing. I love science fiction, but I prefer for it to have a deeper underlying message. In addition to sci-fi, I love literary fiction and books that challenge my conventional way of thinking. I have completed one novel (The Unexpected Inlander), but I have started writing and am working on several books, one of which is a potential sequel to my published novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Unexpected Inlander was inspired twice. The first time was when I, for whatever reason, really wanted to go see a movie. This is a big deal because I rarely actually go to the theater to see a film, but for some reason I just really wanted to go see a good movie–one full of action and suspense and love that was just a little twisted. I checked all the titles that were out at the time, and there was nothing that would satisfy that urge. So, I asked myself what kind of movie I would want to see, and the novel was born. I wrote it and published it, but in the back of my mind, it just wasn’t enough. I was okay with it, but I knew it was missing something. Around the same time, there was a scientific breakthrough with using the CRISPR-Cas9 enzyme to edit DNA. I started asking myself, “What if this became commonplace? What might happen to such a society?” Launching off of those questions, I began writing a story of inequality and the separation between those with and without the genetic modifications. I soon realized how easily that story line could merge with my existing published novel and how that would satisfy and fix the “just doesn’t feel right”/”something’s missing” feelings I had about the published work. So, I pulled the existing edition, revamped it, and now you have The Unexpected Inlander at your fingertips.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Based on all the motivational blogs and posts on advice for writing that I have read, it seems like actually writing and not procrastinating is an unusual habit. Unfortunately, I am quite usual, and I procrastinate and put off the actual writing part as much as the next author. I’m working on it, though 🙂
What authors, or books have influenced you?
George Orwell and Ray Bradbury are the first to come to mind. Their innovation in creating exciting and twisted worlds with deep and complex characters is incredibly inspiring.
What are you working on now?
I have a few stories in the works, but I am trying to focus on a sequel to The Unexpected Inlander.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Word of mouth will always be the best method, but I use social media where I can and when it fits.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Put your seat belt on. Pursuing a career as an author is an unpredictable roller coaster.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep writing and keep going.
What are you reading now?
Quiet by Susan Cain
What’s next for you as a writer?
Ideally publishing the next book…
What is your favorite book of all time?
Pride and Prejudice, obviously (whose isn’t!?!?!)
