Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have previously authored several reports on the decline of endangered species, together with two published non-fiction works on the dolphin slaughter and captivity industry.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest release is entitled “Home”
I have been a conservationist and a vocal advocate for the protection of endangered species and habitats for some years now. My own confinement in a cruel immigration detention center formed the basis for this work; comparing the plight of a captive orca to that of a captive human being.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I can only write whilst hanging upside down in a darkened room. No wait, that was a B-grade horror movie I saw once.
Unusual writing habits…I am very particular about my pen. It is never lent to anybody else and I use it exclusively. I will not sign documents with any pen other than my own….it is a power object, so to speak. I guess Harry Potter feels the same way about his wand!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have always read widely – in fact I read anything and everything I can lay my hands on. At age 10 I was assessed as having a reading age of 25+ and I think the best thing we can do for our kids is encourage them to read.
I think my influences are broad and I can’t say that I have been influenced by any one particular author, though I love the work of Aussie writer Tim Winton
What are you working on now?
I tend to write multiple projects at a time.
Current work includes new historical fiction book “Bloodline” – set in Germany in the 1930’s.
I’m also working on movie scripts/screenplays for a TV series and a feature length movie.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m on Goodreads a lot these days.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write always and write often, even if you don’t complete a particular work. Keep your pen or tablet handy and jot down thoughts, ideas and great lines as they come to you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t eat yellow snow.
What are you reading now?
I’m researching for the new book “Bloodline” right now.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Lunch.
What is your favorite book of all time?
OK, that’s a difficult question. There are many books that have impressed me, moved me, and remained with me over the years.
As simple as it sounds, the House at Pooh Corner series remain all-time favorites of mine, for the pure fact that Winnie the Pooh’s philosophy of simplicity has helped me to view situations with a perfect clarity time and time again.
