Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my first book, although I’ve been writing and publishing poetry and articles related to health and yoga for years.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Fighting For Our Tits. FIGHTING FOR OUR TITS is my first book. It has been writing itself for the last 30 years. It is a self-help book that empowers women to take their health and their breasts back into their own hands. As I’ve watched the whole breast cancer epidemic seemingly spiral out of control, I’ve become more and more determined to find a way to help all women stay healthy and keep our breasts on our chest through natural breast cancer prevention methods. Fighting for Our Tits is funny, wise, and full of little-known information related to keeping our breasts healthy, happy and whole. It is full of alternative breast health solutions that provide unique care for the breasts — like shaking them — that have been proven by science and research to send cancer running. You won’t find anything like this book out there anywhere else – it is a compilation of 30 years of holistic breast care research by a woman with an open and investigative mind, a strong education in health and yoga, and a fierce determination to end breast cancer. Together, we shall overcome!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. I can’t write just a little at the time. When I write it happens all at once. For example, I wrote the entire outline for my book in one day and had the first complete draft of it finished within 5 days. In the past, as a technical writer, it was the same way. Once I begin, I am driven to complete whatever it is as fast as I can. With poetry, I am sometimes overtaken in the middle of driving and I pull of the road and write the poem all at once.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have read so many thousands of books. Mark Twain has certainly been a huge influence in terms of fiction – I have almost everything he’s ever written. Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad. The Color Purple, Alice Walker. I lean much more towards non-fiction than fiction.
In terms of non-fiction, I have scoured the world for philosophy, anything by Carl Jung, esoteric writings, writing about spiritual practices, writing about Ayurveda and health systems, writing about sacred sexuality, history of all kinds from all around the world, and writings about healing the body/mind/spirit. I am obsessed with the idea that somehow our health is completely within our own hands, we just need to know how to steer the ship.
What are you working on now?
I am visioning my next three books- they will be a three-part series for women. Book I is about puberty to childbirth. Book II is about peri-menopause to menopause. Book III is about Female Sexuality throughout all of our life stages.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still exploring the different avenues at this time. Because this is my first book, I’m a newbie, and am not sure about what works and what doesn’t. However, since I own a yoga studio and have a good reach and influence as a result of that, I have mobilized my resources within my community with good results.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be prepared to work really, really hard, and never give up. If you want to change the world you have to be dedicated and persistent. Same is true even when all you want to do is entertain the world.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up. If it doesn’t work the first time, re-envision your process. Tweak it. Fine-tune it as many times as needed. Go back to it again and again until you make it work. Each time you restart the process, you learn something new, which is really the only reason to ever do anything anyway. I live by the quote, attributed to Buddha (although who knows who said it!): “The moment you’re ready to quit is usually the moment right before the miracle happens.”
What are you reading now?
The Unknown She, Astrology for the Soul, William Blake’s Sexual Path to Spiritual Vision, and Making A Good Brain Great. I’m typically reading about six books at once and I usually finish them all eventually.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Getting my first book out there and circulating. Then, within the next two years, complete the writing of my next three books. Book I is about puberty to childbirth. Book II is about peri-menopause to menopause. Book III is about Female Sexuality throughout all of our life stages.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Fiction: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain
Non-Fiction: The Archetypes and Collective Unconscious, Carl Jung
