Lucy watched the nuclear mushroom cloud rise. It grew, billowed, shimmered yellow, fiery, and black. She couldn’t close her eyes or even look away. Buildings were burning and turning into ghosts. Even the air itself was on fire. She knew—this wasn’t a dream, this was happening all over Earth right now.
The planet was dying.
Lucy took a step forward.
Whispered, “No.”
What was she hoping for?
Another step.
Her hands shot up in a protective gesture.
“No!”
Loudly now, with her last bit of strength.
The flames enveloped Lucy. But strangely, they didn’t touch her. What was this?
The world disappeared.

Wanderer closed his eyes. On his silver bracelet with black beads, a new, bright white one appeared. It burned unbearably. He knew it would pass quickly. The scorching white-hot drop would turn golden, then orange, then red, slowly bleeding into a deep crimson, darken, lose its light, and become yet another dead black bead. Another failed attempt. At least he managed to pull the new Guardian out.
