About MAKIN’ IT HOME
I wrote this book to give young people, especially young men, the information they need to successfully manage encounters with the police, and to ensure that they make it home safely afterward. The rules I describe here are based on thorough analyses of video footage documenting aggressive police tactics, a careful study of survival rules drafted by others, and healthy doses of prayer and common sense.
To help young people remember the ten rules to surviving an encounter with police, I worked them into a poem. I have softened the presentation of subjects that might be disturbing to some, but urge you to read this book yourselves before sharing it with your child, to be sure that it is appropriate for their age and temperament. It can be difficult to discuss these matters with children, but it is necessary that we do so. I hope that this book provides a framework for that discussion and for what we call “The Talk”, in your home.
Our communities need better systems of policing. While we work toward that goal, we must prepare our young people to protect themselves in the imperfect conditions in which we all live. Knowledge, as always, is among our most valuable resources.
