Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a non-fiction writer/editor by day and a fiction writer/editor by night. So far I’ve released one novel, two short story collections, an illustrated children’s book, a non-fiction home improvement guide, and I’ve edited a horror anthology.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent short story collection was released by Sinister Grin Press, and I dubbed it SEVEN FEET UNDER because it contained seven horror tales, and I thought the title was clever wordplay on the usual depth of a grave (six feet).
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have two (soon to have three) kids, so my time management for writing is sporadic at best. Sometimes I’ll get up before dawn to get some work accomplished.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jack Ketchum, Joe Lansdale, Robert McCammon, Ray Bradbury, Charles Bukowski, George Orwell, and of course Stephen King but that guy doesn’t need the extra promotion.
What are you working on now?
I’m in the middle of final edits on my third short story collection. I’m also preparing to release the horror anthology DOUBLE BARREL HORROR, VOLUME 2, which I’m editing and will release on my micro-press, Pint Bottle Press.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Facebook a lot, but I have a one-stop shop for all things promotional related to my work, including a blog, at the Pint Bottle Press website.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn from other writers but don’t aim to mimic them. Be yourself and establish your own voice. Also, new writers should take all writing advice with a grain of salt, because we’re all different and what works for one person might not work for another.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Know when to break the rules.
What are you reading now?
BOY’S LIFE by Robert McCammon
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve been writing shorts stories for the past few years, and I think I’ll focus on a longer work. There will probably be some bloodshed and dead bodies, though.
What is your favorite book of all time?
This is an impossible question, but THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is one that will always stick with me.
