Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written a ton of books, not all of them publishable! I was an avid writer in elementary school and middle school, and I wrote “novels” in 3-ring binders of college-rule paper. I transitioned to short stories and flash fiction in college while I was working as an RA to make ends meet. Now, I can’t stop.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I wrote Breaking the Rules as a love letter of-sorts to my boyfriend. Many of our experiences in college are reflected in the scenes between Hayden and John. I’ve changed some details to make things a little more interesting, of course 😉
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to wake up at seven AM to start writing before I get a chance to think about my plans for the day. I like to begin on a clear head with a cup of coffee. I also listen to DJ sets with minimal lyrical components to help focus.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Small Changes Over Long Periods of Time by K. M. Szpara is my all-time favorite piece of short fiction. I really enjoy when trans men are included in fiction whole-heartedly, messy bits and all. I enjoy trans YA, but I prefer more adult themes in works I read and write.
I’m also an enormous fan of Maggie Stiefvater’s series The Raven Cycle. As a kid, I loved Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Mysterious Benedict Society.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on my next novel, hoping for a trilogy. Another enemies to lovers story with a superhero and an EMT.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, I think writing quality work and letting reviews speak for themselves helps to promote my book. I recommend having an ARC team and thanking them for their dedication.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write all the time, every day if you can. Write in sprints. Limit noise distractions. Read constantly, and have others read your work.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Bill Hader said critiques can illuminate when something is missing from your writing, but that person’s suggestion of how to fix it is usually wrong.
What are you reading now?
I am reading the poetry and creative non-fiction my beta reader partners are working on!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m writing almost every day, in my free hours in between shifts at my two full-time jobs. I’m focusing on craft, the art of story telling, and character study. I’m transitioning towards dual-POV, something I haven’t done since my early days writing fan fiction!
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater.
