Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have published two books in the Weapons of Choice series, with two more being edited now and at least two more planned. I also have a free book in five novella parts that is released to subscribers as each book is released.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Return Protocol: Weapons of Choice Book 2. The series aims to have real people with their own issues face Alien Contact, and later discover that there are multiple planets in the Universe seeded with humans. As their understanding of the technology they discover grows, they face the dilemma of power and moral choices coloured by their own emotional situations. Though action focussed, the series aims to make the reader think about the choices behind conflict.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Ah, yes. I struggle with nerve difficulties in my hands so I have the habit of shaking out my hands after each sentence. Now, when the action gets going the shakes between sentences can become quite animated – glasses and cups flying everywhere.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Ray Bradbury, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Frank Herbert, Alistair Reynolds, Tolkein, Raymond E. Feist, Jim Butcher and even E.E. Doc Smith when I need a throwback.
What are you working on now?
Zuri’s War: Weapons of Choice Book 3. This is the characters first contact with other humans that were seeded upon a new planet, where they encounter cosmic spores (yep).
Finn’s War: Weapons of Choice Book 4, from gladiatorial games to genetic experimentation, with a surprise change for Smith, the deceased Corporal turned AI in the series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am learning this as I go along. I do believe that from my experience so far I have found what doesn’t work, and that is competing with the mega-sci-fi book authors who have so many books new authors can become overwhelmed. So for that reason using promotion sites such as PRETTY-HOT.COM are essential and I am grateful for their work.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. Write, polish and improve until your product is at a standard that sells itself. Get an amazing cover and then explore the support promotion sites give as you try and get your foothold. Ans be patient (at least more patient than me).
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You have to inject yourself with a little fantasy every day in order not to die of reality-Ray Bradbury.
What are you reading now?
Battleground – Dresden Files No.17 for relief from the Science Fiction Writing.
Waiting patiently for the headspace to tackle Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Patience!
Writing the rest of the series. Once that is complete I want to take stock and see how far my writing has developed. Question whether I captured the audience I expected and whether I bought a little starlight to their universe. Then take a breath and start again.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I feel that reading is a mood thing and that when I feel good my choice will change to when I feel low.
However, Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky sticks in my mind and will not leave.
