Nicole Mims

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Nicole Mims is a sleep physician in Charlotte, NC and co-author of the new self-help parenting book Power Switch Parenting. She has a B.A. in philosophy, got her M.D. at the University of Alabama – Birmingham, and did a neurology residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. She’s been working in sleep medicine since 2011, and currently works at Atrium Health. She has extensive experience in evaluating and recommending modifications to people’s schedules to help improve their sleep and alertness. She is also the mom to two beautiful children and in her quest to be the best parent, she’s read many parenting self-help books without finding a practical solution to the crisis affecting parents today. Her motivation for writing this book was to provide some simple guidelines to improve a difficult time and remind all parents to give themselves some grace.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Power Switch Parenting is the name of my book. I was inspired to write it because I wanted a practical solution to parenting that acknowledges the importance of quality time with children and giving parents an opportunity to be independent of children.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I like to write with my dog sitting next to me but I imagine that’s not very unusual.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love time management books. I think they’re the most practical how to books and I find them very motivating. I also like the book Overcoming Intrusive Thoughts. After I had children, I had alot of scary thoughts about my children getting injured and this book helped me through that effectively and the concepts in the book are useful to overcoming anxiety about other things as well.

What are you working on now?
I’m loosely working on another burnout book although I’m still rolling the ideas around in my head.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning but I like the concept of loading the book to these kinds of sites.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing the book is only half the battle. Have a battle plan for how to promote the book as well! I’m learning this now.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Anything worth having requires hard work.

What are you reading now?
Organize Tomorrow Today by Dr. Jason Selk

What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully another how to book.

What is your favorite book of all time?
The Scarlett Pimpernell. Close second would be Good Omens.
