Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in Portland, Ore., where the food and music are good, outdoor recreation is hard to beat, and the shore is a short two-hour drive. Contrary to irresponsible reports, there are no gangs of antifa roaming the city.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
January 6: A Novel was inspired by the insurrection at the Capitol. To my knowledge it is the only fictional rendering of how that assault could have played out. Democracy was in peril and the threats posed then are with us still.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Because I travel and have other interests in retirement, I write regularly but not on a set schedule – if that qualifies as unusual.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Early on, Hemingway. More recently, Cormac McCarthy and Pat Conroy. For non-fiction, Barbara Tuchman early on and Walter Isaacson.
What are you working on now?
Marketing January 6: A Novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Book promotion is a struggle with, for me so far, no “best” solution.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write only as long as it is fun.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That involves grieving, and was: Be kind to yourself.
What are you reading now?
Candice Millard’s Destiny of the Nation. She gives the touch of a novelist to the assassination of President Garfield.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I don’t know yet, but at no time in my experience have there been so many issues – global and domestic – worthy of writing about.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
