Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have a lifetime of experience publishing fiction and nonfiction. I have written a total of seven books. My historical fiction novel, Golden Boxty in the Frypan, inspired by my mother’s coming-of-age experiences during the 1930s, is published with Pen It Publications. My textbook is published by Milady/Cengage Learning. I indie-published A Baker’s Dozen For Writers: 13 Tips for Great Storytelling and Story of a Stolen Girl, an International thriller. My literary fiction trilogy, Sticks in a Bundle, is contracted for a three-book debut.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is A Baker’s Dozen For Writers: 13 Tips for Great Storytelling. My success in publishing craft articles inspired me to compile this small book of writing tips, presented in a light and humorous way, that will make a big difference when integrated into a story or book.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My only unusual habit is to write my back cover blurb first. This helps me develop my character and book arcs and stay on track. Other than that, I just need a teapot and a few hours alone and I am happily banging away on my laptop.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Barbara Kingsolver has had the greatest influence on me. I explain further down.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on my second Irish historical fiction novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a website and post on FB, X, Instagram, and TikTok. I participate in signings, book fairs, and open mic readings. I do interviews such as this and attend a multitude of writers’ meetings. I have no idea what works best.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write from your heart, but sign up for workshops, read online craft articles, and learn more by joining a writing critique group so that you can present what is in your heart the way it deserves to be presented.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Three things:
First, my dissertation advisor told me, “Write it as you would say it.”
Second, “Be careful whose advice you take.”
Third, “In ten years, you will look back and either you did it or you didn’t.”
What are you reading now?
I belong to two writing critique groups, so keeping up with their submissions takes up most of my reading time.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to finish my WIP, my second Irish novel, by the end of 2024.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I love the way she masterfully shifted the POV from one character to the next and created unique strengths and weaknesses for each while integrating the culture of the Belgian Congo people and an American missionary family into the storyline.
