Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Freya Pickard, the author of The Kaerling, a dark fantasy series exploring themes of prejudice and power. I’ve just released my 15th e-book and have also published 7 paperbacks.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Uneasy Allies is the seventh volume of The Kaerling series and it follows the journey of five characters. I wanted to explore the tensions between 5 characters who didn’t really know how to trust each other, but who have to travel together in order to achieve their goals.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I’m creating a new draft, I listen to the music of Disturbed, a heavy metal band, as their music sets off the right kind of creativity in my brain.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I think Tad Williams has been the biggest writing influence in my life; I love re-reading his books because you learn how to reveal the plot bit by bit, how to give hints here and there of things to come without telling the reader exactly what is going to happen.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on volume 8 of The Kaerling – Fair Wind. I can’t say anymore about it because to do so would spoil the plot of Uneasy Allies for those who haven’t read it yet!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use a variety of marketing methods including a variety of websites to promote my new books as well as my newsletter, blog and emailing people to tell them about it. I have yet to work out which is the best way to market!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Always write what you want to write. Always write how you want to write. Don’t let anyone tell you what you should be writing about – let it come from the heart.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do what you enjoy.

I’m re-reading Thaw by Fiona Robyn.

To continue writing The Kaerling…
