Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing since I was in elementary school and wanted to be in the princess books I loved to read. I submitted my first published book when I was eighteen, and I’ve been publishing ever since, with 15 different books published in my name.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called “Death Flirts Back,” and it came from a vivid dream I had about a girl who falls for the personification of her family curse. The story evolved over time to be about a Grim Reaper, and I love it!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m a little neuro-spicy, so I can’t sit still too long. You’ll find me writing a few paragraphs and then running to the sink to do dishes, then sitting back down to write, and so on.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a huge fan of Agatha Christie and her focus on humanity in her mysteries. But I’d say my biggest influence was from the Alex Rider series; I love those books, and their fast pace probably influences my own the most.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the next book in my “Scaleshifter” series, which is about kids who get forcibly turned into dragons. I’m also trying my hand at a scifi story called “The Mermaids of Europa.” I can never work on just one thing at a time!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Nothing really beats word of mouth, but I also love going to local events, libraries, and schools. Living close to Atlanta, I have a wealth of bookstores to work with, too!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t succumb to the idea that you’re a bad writer just because you’ve convinced yourself you are. No one can write like you can. And honestly, all writers are bad at it when they start. You just have to keep at it, and one day, you’ll realize you’re actually very good!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Always always always check your made-up fantasy names to make sure they aren’t bad words in a real life language.
What are you reading now?
I’m rereading the Alex Rider series and introducing my daughter to American Girl books.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m hoping to do more local author events as my kids enter elementary school. I’ve loved the ones I’ve done so far, and I enjoy being part of the community.
What is your favorite book of all time?
This is a hard one. It might have to be the Books of Pellinor. I cry every time I read them, just from being overwhelmed with emotion!
