Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been writing fanfiction for the last 14 years. I started writing Glee fanfiction because I got so angry when they broke up Finn and Rachel and the rest is history. I’ve also written Captain Swan fiction for Once Upon a Time and most recently Polin for Bridgerton. Dragonfly is my first self-published book which is part of a three book series I am writing.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Dragonfly was created over Christmas 2024. I was so frustrated with politics and fanfiction that I decided I wanted to branch out and create my own world. This little family of the Lancasters somehow popped in my head. I started writing about Sam and Blake first and as I started reading the story to my daughter, she started asking what was going to happen to Dylan and Jackson. Of course, I had no plans for them, but once she started asking more questions, my brain wanted to know the answers as well and then more stories started to take shape. So Firefly and Butterfly were born.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write very linearly. I can’t skip around in my chapters. I have to start at Chapter 1 and move on from there. I know other people are able to skip chapters and write further along in the book, but my brain will NOT allow it. The most I can do is write a scene and put it on a note for later.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was influenced by my friend Natalie Murray, who wrote Glee fanfiction back in the day at the same time as me. She has gone on to write many published books and I’ve been so proud of her success. I’ve looked up to her as a model to show that you can put your mind to anything and do it. Beyond that I simply adore anything written by Emily Henry. The People We Meet on Vacation changed my life. Outside of romance, Patricia Cornwell is the entire reason I started reading. She is a marvel!
What are you working on now?
I’m in the middle of editing book 2 of the Lancaster novels, Firefly, which is Jackson’s story. I have also started writing book 3, Butterfly, which is Dylan’s story.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still so new to this, I have yet to find a good method. I am on my Instagram quite often but have not really found a following yet. I am trying book bub ads and Amazon ads for my first book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My biggest advice is to allow yourself space to breathe and make mistakes. Do not compare yourself to the books on the shelves at bookstores. Those authors have been doing this for a long time and you probably aren’t there yet, and that’s ok. Just remember that every time you write a new book, a new chapter, is a chance to improve and get better.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I have a friend on Tumblr who reminded me that comparison is the thief of joy, because I wasn’t going to try to publish my books because I had friends and authors who were much better than me. Thankfully, I stopped listening to myself and took her advice and put myself out there, anyway. Even if book 1 isn’t a glowing hit, book 2 will get better, and then book 3 will continue to grow from there. After that, the sky is the limit. And at least I did it!
What are you reading now?
I’m in the middle of reading The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. It helps to read tropes similar to the book I’m writing/editing for inspiration. Currently book 2, Firefly is an enemies to lovers, so this is giving me inspiration.
What’s next for you as a writer?
After I finish my trilogy for the Lancaster Novels, I have a standalone book that I have an idea for that I want to work on. Regardless, the point is to never stop writing, growing, and continuing to reach for a dream I didn’t even think was possible until now.
What is your favorite book of all time?
This is a literally an impossible question. For the longest time, it has been The Catcher in the Rye. I think this is just because I remember it being my favorite thing in high school. But I don’t know for sure why. I also loved As you Like it, and Wuthering Heights. But honestly, right now, The People We Meet on Vacation has my heart.
