Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Uma Devi, and I’m thrilled to be here sharing a bit about myself. My journey in the world of yoga has been quite the adventure, especially when it comes to chair yoga.
So, I’ve written three books, and they’ve been my labor of love. The first one is called ‘Chair Yoga for Seniors Over 60.’ It’s been really heartwarming to see how it’s been embraced as a go-to guide for chair yoga practices. Building on that, I penned ‘Chair Yoga Mastery for Seniors’ and ‘Forever Young with Chair Yoga.’ These two dive even deeper into the practice and its wonderful benefits.
Now, why seniors, you might ask? Well, I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible older folks and witnessing how yoga can be a game-changer in their lives. And that’s what fuels my passion for teaching yoga to seniors.
In terms of my own yoga journey, I’ve dabbled in various styles like Hatha, Iyengar, and Restorative Yoga, which have all shaped my approach to teaching.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked with a diverse bunch of students. Some deal with chronic pain, some have limited mobility – it’s a wide spectrum. But my mantra has always been adaptability. Yoga should be accessible, safe, and nurturing for everyone.
I genuinely believe that yoga is a potent tool for physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and I want it to be accessible to all, no matter your age or physical condition.
Beyond just writing and teaching, I’m on a mission. I want to spread the magic of yoga to seniors all over the world. That’s why I host workshops and trainings for yoga teachers, healthcare pros, and caregivers. My goal is to equip them with the knowledge and skills to share yoga with seniors effectively.
It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness how yoga can improve the lives of seniors, and I’m excited to continue this journey of wellness and empowerment.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called ‘Forever Young with Chair Yoga.’ What inspired this book was the incredible resilience and vitality I’ve witnessed in seniors who have embraced chair yoga as a part of their lives. It’s truly remarkable how this practice can make you feel forever young, no matter your age or physical condition.
As I worked with seniors over the years, I saw firsthand how chair yoga can bring about a sense of renewed energy, improved flexibility, and mental clarity. These transformations were my biggest inspiration. I wanted to create a resource that not only celebrated the potential of chair yoga but also provided a practical guide for seniors to harness its benefits.
‘Forever Young with Chair Yoga’ is my way of sharing the stories and experiences of seniors who have defied age-related limitations through this practice. It’s a testament to the idea that yoga is not just about the body; it’s about nurturing the spirit and embracing life at any stage. I hope this book inspires others to embark on their own journey to feeling forever young through chair yoga
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Oh, you know, I wouldn’t say they’re unusual, but they’re certainly unique to me. I firmly believe in starting my day on the right note. So, I have this little routine that I hold dear. I’m an early riser; the morning is my sanctuary. I wake up at the crack of dawn, long before the world stirs.
The first thing I do is roll out my yoga mat. I find my center, my peace, through yoga and meditation. It’s not just about staying physically fit; it’s about grounding myself, finding inspiration, and setting the right intention for the day ahead.
Once my yoga session and meditation are complete, that’s when I dive into writing. I find that this morning ritual not only keeps me energized but also helps me tap into a wellspring of creativity. It’s as if I’ve cleared the clutter from my mind and opened the door to fresh ideas.
So, while it might not be unusual, it’s certainly a deeply ingrained part of my writing process. It’s about finding that balance and connection between my mind, body, and creativity. And it’s something I cherish every day.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve drawn inspiration and wisdom from several sources, each contributing to my understanding of yoga and chair yoga in unique ways.
One of the towering figures in yoga is B.K.S. Iyengar. His meticulous approach to yoga alignment and the use of props has been a significant influence on my teaching style, particularly in adapting yoga for seniors. Iyengar’s emphasis on precision and the therapeutic benefits of yoga postures have played a vital role in shaping my understanding of chair yoga.
Another source of inspiration comes from the ancient sage Patanjali, known for his Yoga Sutras. His philosophical teachings on the eight limbs of yoga and the path to spiritual enlightenment have provided a strong foundation for my approach to the deeper aspects of yoga practice. Patanjali’s wisdom reminds me that yoga is not just about physical postures; it’s a holistic journey of self-discovery.
Additionally, I’ve been inspired by contemporary authors and practitioners who have made yoga accessible to a broader audience. For instance, Dr. Loren Fishman, a physician who combines medical knowledge with yoga therapy, has deepened my understanding of yoga’s therapeutic applications, particularly for seniors with specific health concerns.
Swami Sivananda’s teachings on the holistic approach to yoga, encompassing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, have also been influential. His emphasis on the unity of all aspects of yoga aligns with my belief that yoga should be a comprehensive practice, addressing the whole individual.
Ultimately, it’s the collective wisdom of these authors, gurus, and practitioners that has shaped my approach to chair yoga. Their teachings have guided me in creating a practice that is not only physically beneficial but also emotionally and spiritually enriching, tailored to the unique needs of seniors and those with limited mobility.
What are you working on now?
Currently, my focus is on expanding the trilogy about chair yoga. Building on the success and positive feedback from my previous books, ‘Chair Yoga for Seniors Over 60’ and ‘Chair Yoga Mastery for Seniors,’ I’m excited to bring the third installment to life.
This new book will delve even deeper into the practice of chair yoga, exploring advanced techniques, variations, and a holistic approach to senior wellness. It’s a project that’s very close to my heart because it allows me to continue sharing the transformative power of yoga with seniors and individuals with limited mobility.
Additionally, I’m always exploring ways to make yoga more accessible to a wider audience. I’m in the early stages of planning online courses and workshops that will provide individuals with the tools and knowledge to practice chair yoga effectively, whether they’re beginners or experienced practitioners.
So, in a nutshell, I’m dedicated to the ongoing journey of bringing the benefits of chair yoga to as many people as possible and sharing the knowledge and insights I’ve gained over the years.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
One of the most effective methods I’ve found for promoting my books is through websites like this one. Platforms that connect authors with readers and provide a space for sharing insights, experiences, and knowledge play a pivotal role in reaching a broader audience.
These websites offer a fantastic opportunity to engage with readers directly, answer their questions, and provide valuable information about the books. They also allow for meaningful discussions, sharing of ideas, and building a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about yoga and chair yoga in particular.
Furthermore, these platforms often feature book reviews, which can be incredibly helpful in establishing credibility and trust among potential readers. Positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations from readers who have benefited from my books have been instrumental in driving interest and sales.
So, websites that facilitate these connections and discussions have proven to be a valuable tool in promoting my work and sharing the benefits of chair yoga with a wider audience.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Certainly, here are three passion-oriented pieces of advice for new authors:
Write from the Heart: Pour your genuine passion and enthusiasm into your writing. When you write about what truly inspires you, your authenticity will shine through and captivate readers.
Stay Inspired: Continuously nurture your creative spirit. Explore new ideas, read widely, and immerse yourself in the world that fascinates you. Inspiration often leads to your best work.
Persist and Believe: Writing can be a challenging journey, but persistence is key. Believe in the importance of your message and keep writing, even when faced with obstacles. Your passion will drive you forward and keep you motivated.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
One of the most profound pieces of guru advice I’ve come across is:
“Be present in this moment. The past is gone, and the future is yet to come. The only reality is now.”
This timeless wisdom reminds us of the importance of mindfulness and being fully engaged in the present moment. It’s a reminder that the worries of the past and the anxieties about the future can often cloud our perception of the beauty and opportunities that exist in the present. By focusing on the here and now, we can find peace, clarity, and a deeper connection to ourselves and the world around us.
What are you reading now?
Currently, I’m immersed in the profound teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar through his book “The Tree of Yoga.” This classic work delves into the essence of yoga philosophy, practice, and the profound connections between the body, mind, and spirit. It’s a timeless source of inspiration and wisdom that continues to enrich my understanding of yoga and its transformative power.
“The Tree of Yoga” by B.K.S. Iyengar is a masterpiece that offers a deep and comprehensive exploration of yoga in its truest sense. Within its pages, readers embark on a transformative journey, guided by the wisdom and experience of one of the most influential yoga teachers of our time.
At its core, the book delves into the philosophy of yoga, illuminating the fundamental principles that underlie this ancient practice. Iyengar’s eloquent prose invites readers to contemplate the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of yoga, including its roots in Indian philosophy and its connection to the human experience.
What sets this book apart is Iyengar’s ability to bridge the gap between the esoteric and the everyday. He makes the profound teachings of yoga accessible to anyone, whether they are beginners or experienced practitioners. With clarity and depth, he demystifies complex concepts, making them relevant to our modern lives.
What’s next for you as a writer?
As a yoga writer, my journey continues to unfold in the realm of yoga literature and knowledge sharing. Here’s how I envision the path ahead:
Comprehensive Yoga Resources: My primary goal is to create comprehensive and accessible resources for yoga practitioners. This includes books, articles, and online courses that empower individuals to deepen their yoga practice, regardless of their experience level.
Mind-Body Connection: I will continue to emphasize and explore the mind-body connection in yoga. This includes delving into mindfulness, meditation, and the holistic benefits of yoga, helping readers unlock the transformative potential of this ancient practice.
Community and Teacher Support: Building a vibrant community of yoga enthusiasts and supporting yoga teachers are priorities. I’ll engage with readers and fellow practitioners, facilitating meaningful discussions and providing resources to assist yoga teachers in their journey of empowering students.
What is your favorite book of all time?
My favorite book of all time would undoubtedly be “The Heart of Yoga” by T.K.V. Desikachar. This book holds a special place in my heart because it beautifully encapsulates the essence of yoga, its philosophy, and its transformative power. It’s a timeless guide that not only deepens one’s understanding of yoga but also serves as a source of inspiration for both practitioners and teachers. “The Heart of Yoga” has been a guiding light on my own yoga journey, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to explore the profound depths of this ancient practice.
