Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Victor L. Lockwood and I am a writer, digital artist, web developer and criminologist.
Although I have two other books finished, Empire of Ravens is my first published novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Empire of Ravens, the first part of the Chronicles of Fenirion series, and it comes as a result of my own evolution as a person. It is filled with fantasy, witches and dragons, elves and amazing lands, but all those elements were built with what dreams I had as a child, the fears and struggles I had while being a teen and the challenges faced when reaching adulthood.
Through these fantastical characters I could tell all of those things, be that living with anxiety, figuring out the meaning of home, earning the sense of belonging or coming into terms with your identity and accepting yourself and your life.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have to write at night, late, like from 23:00 pm to 5:00 am.
I also have to write sequentially, even if I plan scenes ahead. They must be written when their time comes!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Here’s the funny bit… Although I write epic fantasy, I’ve mostly read thrillers – that’s what I usually found at home. Still, I would say Tolkien and Lovecraft, if “indirectly”, since their works inspired the media that, in the end, influenced me, be that movie or videogame wise.
Then, of course, there’s Edgar Allan Poe and his poem The Raven. Considering the title of my novel, I’d say there are no doubts there!
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on the sequel to Empire of Ravens, of course!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
It is hard to say for me since I’m quite new to this whole “promotion” world, so I am still figuring it all out myself.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I am usually not fond of advices, since they can sometimes be taken as musts instead of what they are, but one I think is really valuable is to always compare yourself with you, not others. Aim to improve based on your previous work and focus on your path.
Also, remember, your write for yourself, not the others. Be true to what you want to write and what you believe in and don’t think about what could apease others. Your book is your journey.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be more selfish, give yourself time, allow yourself to heal.
What are you reading now?
The Final Empire from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing the sequel to Empire of Ravens. I can say that will keep me occupied for a while!
What is your favorite book of all time?
I’m going to say mine, mainly because I got to write the story I ever wanted!
